Interrupted

This drawing has deliberately made to be impossible to view. The two halves are on opposite walls, and in order to line up the drawing the viewer must interrupt the image.

The Humidity and Heat

Posted in PICA by robbiekarmel on January 31, 2012

Due to the humidity and temperatures my drawings have been falling off the walls over night. I am either going to have to find a better way to anchor them to the walls, clear them away and store them, or leave them where they lie, building up over the period of the residency. Ideally I would like the work to build up on the walls, but only two of the four walls will take pins, which might make that difficult.

Wild West

Today I moved into my new studio for the next three months at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. It’s an amazing space and I’ll be doing a focused space specific drawing project in it.

Here are some photos of  the space, including the first work I’ve made in the space; a diptych which requires a strategically placed mirror to view the work as a whole:

New Year

Posted in Weekly Project, Writing by robbiekarmel on January 1, 2012

At the beginning of 2011 I decided to try and post a series of images or videos as an ongoing online exhibition every week. I fell just short at 50 out of 52, but as a project to get myself producing work and developing as many new ideas as possible I am very happy with the outcome.

This year I am very excited to have been accepted into both a three month residency at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and a Masters degree in research at the College of Fine Art in Sydney. I will be heading to Perth on the 20th of January and will be further developing ideas I was working with while drawing the severed heads series. I will then head over to Sydney to begin my Masters degree in the second semester.

I’ll keep putting work up as I make it this year and will be documenting the work I make during my residency in Perth.

Also, I’d like to thank everyone for looking at the work I’ve been putting up, being interested, posting comments and coming to exhibitions!

A few weeks ago Reuben Ingall and Evan Dorrian played an improvised set on the roof of the New Acton Apartments and I was there to record it:

This week I have started a photography blog. It can be found here. It is an attempt to develop my photography skills and to take photos more frequently, I will try to update it regularly. I will keep it separate from this website and hopefully it will grow into its own.
